Finished. I will review it when I have read all 3. For now I will say that Tolkeins world is deep and lived in.

Also, I'll add, I read it wrong at first and needed to adjust. You dont read this as a novel, you read it to enter into a world and this happens to be one story within it. Not for everyone.

Finally, there is great stuff here about friendship, hospitality, temptation, racism, royalty, love, and dominion.

Ill say it.
Overrated and boring so far. Hope it gets better (I expect it will).

Travel log day 97: still not there yet

Reading through this while listening to a dramatized audio reading with a full cast... and my goodness. It makes it like 30x more immersive and 110x more epic. Highly recommend.

Pope Stephen the VI was literally crazy lol. He tried and found guilty the previous pope be excavating his dead body and putting it on a chair and brining in a court. Then, after the court found him guilty, he severed 3 of his fingers and paraded his dead body through the city streets...

The early half of the 20th century was SO fascinating and our Presidents reflected that in every way: flawed, racist, strong leaders, fascinating individuals.

Sam reflecting on meeting the Elves:

Picking this up again. Really great description over manliness and bravery. "That immaculate manliness within ourselves" when we behold bravery in others.
