I'm getting tired of this. 😐
And I'm sorry, but I don't really like the wolf character. 😐

This is reminding me of a mix of The Lord of the Rings and Between Two Fires but a kid friendly version. And I don't mean that in a good way, considering I DNFed BtF and never read the LOTR books (Although I did watch the movies and I love those)
Now if you love those books I mentioned, then don't get your hopes up for this, because it's still very different. The adventure just reminds me of those. Some similarities.

First, I wish these chapters were shorter.
And two, I didn't realize this was a fairy tale/stories book, either I should have paid more attention to the synopsis, or maybe the synopsis just didn't explain it well. It doesn't show actual fairy tale characters (yet), but it did mention Red Riding Hood, and for some reason LOTR is a story world in this. All stories are a land in this or something? Which I don't like...

I hate Cordelia so much. She is such a terrible character, let alone main character! She is whiny, bossy, rude, and snaps so easily. She has anger issues.

This book has/does so much telling, and lacks showing.

So disappointing.

Ugh... this is NOT for me.
I'll try to power through though.
I so wish these characters were in their late teens, not 11.
This book mentions Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, freaking REDDIT!
The 11 year olds have cellphones and they use Instagram. The main character's former friends who are the same age post themselves on Instagram.
I'm sorry, it's my personal opinion, but I don't like when young kids have social media

I swear... if these authors say "Marrill bit her lip" ONE MORE FREAKING TIME! I MIGHT THROW THIS BOOK ACROSS THE ROOM.
IS THAT ALL SHE DOES? BITE HER LIP?
Also, why is the Naysayer still here? He's grumpy, bossy and rude, would he really still be on the Kraken and with the crew 6 months later? I feel like he would've left them ASAP.
Also also! The memory thing with these "Wivervanes" is already getting repetitive.

This city they're trying to explain does not make sense...
Never-ending sinking city, and there are crane workers that constantly take pieces/buildings that are nearing the bottom and bring them back to the top? Constantly? Over and over again? Sounds depressing. I don't even know how that works... obviously logic is thrown out the window and is replaced by the Pirate Stream's magic, but I still don't understand.

Jack is the worst character in this. 🤦‍♀️ I know this is targeted towards preteen boys, but oh my God, he feels like an incel. (We are stuck in his head... in first person...)
This is a very easy and quick read though, so that's nice.

So cute so far, but the Fangs of Dang are so cartoonishly evil. Even for a kids book. 🤣

I hate these characters. I ESPECIALLY hate Mal. She's so annoying and rude and weird, and I HATE the twist that revolves around her. Makes the three things I stated about her even worse.
This book is so much telling, very little showing. I don't like the writing. I don't like the story. And there are far too many things that give me the ick considering this is supposed to be a middle-grade? Or in between that and YA?

WHY IS THIS BOOK SO OBSESSED WITH FREAKING BLOOD?! ALMOST EVERY PAGE IT'S TALKING ABOUT BLOOD OR SOMETHING/SOMEONE DYING OR SOMEONE TRYING/PLANNING TO KILL SOMEONE! WTF?
LIKE WHY DID WE HAVE TO HAVE MAL BITE HER LIP SO HARD THAT SHE DREW BLOOD? IN A RANDOM CONVERSATION!
THEN YOU GO AND KILL AN INNOCENT AND CUTE LITTLE BABY ANIMAL? TALKING ABOUT ITS BLOOD AND EVEN SHOWING THE BLOOD IN THE DRAWING?!
WHY IS THIS SO DARK

I know for sure I would not be recommending this book to anyone, let alone my nieces and nephews. 🤦‍♀️
I would not want an 8 or 9 year old to read this.
THEY WOULD PROBABLY CRY.
They straight up murdered a parakeet on page. Wth. It wasn't very graphic, but still... and there's other stuff that adds to the fact of me not recommending this to kids, especially on the younger side of the intended audience.

Why is there a dangerous glasshouse that has plants that immediately try to kill people, and why is it so easy to sneak into. There should be guards outside. These people have kids, and know how they can be sneaky and rebellious. Some like to break rules.
Ivy Helix is annoying and we don't need these bratty bully characters in every single book.
Screw Sheldrake. Stupid lying douchebag. Probably evil too.

Hmmm... kind of cute so far, but some questionable choices for a book meant for 8-12 year olds.

I hope this gets a bit better at the end. I WANT to love this. It's cute and is a good middle-grade story, but a huge chunk of this is a slog... :(
I do hope it ends well enough because I would like to read the sequels.

It's cute, and I like the fantastical-ness of it and I'm really enjoying Ardent the wizard, but it's so slow.

This is Middle Grade, and it's not even Horror, but that crying scene at the end of chapter 11 was kinda creepy! Dang, that might be my favorite chapter so far. I loved that.

Iris is a freaking brat. I can't stand her. She's a terrible FMC. I so wish Pike would laugh in her face, call her an idiot and leave and never look back. I wish Pike would get a girl who actually suits him and isn't an immature whiny "Everything is about me" girl.
I wish this was in third-person or at least not in the POV of Iris. I don't care for first-person, especially when it's in an unlikeable character's head.

Ugh... I was really liking this at first, but the crushing is happening WAY too soon for my liking. It feels almost insta-love, which I freakin hate. And yes, I know I'm on page 106 of 309, it's still too fast.
Now I know if I want to read more romance, that my preference is a SLOW-burn.
Also, this is YA, there better not be any sex scenes, let alone explicit open door ones...
Let's see if this gets better or worse.

I like it SO FAR, but I'm nervous it's going to pull a 180. I dislike half the cop characters, (Hank and Scully can go screw themselves) and I do not like Mary or Laura, aka the two "Final Girls".
Tom is fine, and I kinda like Winters from the bit he's shown.
I'm interested in what the reveal is going to be.

I can't stand Akane, Tojin and Izzy... they're so annoying and whiny. Oh boo-hoo, Painter this, Painter that. Ok, we get it. He "ruined" your life. It's your fault for relying on him like that and expecting to be NEPOed into the Dreamwatch. Not exactly nepotism, they’re friends, not relatives, and it's more of a recruit/sidekick thing, but with the way they’re acting, it's close to being accurate. Lol.
So bored...

I'm kind of loving Design. With the little bit she's been in, she's been amazing. 🤣

Yumi on the other hand... has been pretty annoying, bossy and b*tchy (apologies for this mean word.) to Painter. And the book feels like it's trying to paint (hehe) Painter out as the jerk in the wrong!
My favorites are definitely Design and Painter so far. Screw everyone else lol...
Also Hoid's narration is soooo strange.

The romance is cringey, and I'm not seeing any chemistry, only the author forcing them to "like" each other because "this is supposed to be somewhat of a romance, so they HAVE to like each other romantically."... I'd rather it just be them becoming besties. Lol
I don't really like Yumi's world and find it boring and repetitive so far and Liyun is nasty. Nikaro's world is more interesting and I hope it stays that way.

I want more small-town horror books to have creepily friendly or indifferent locals instead of the constant and overused nasty hag attitudes. It's pretty tiring to be honest. We already have to deal with these bad attitudes on the internet and in real as it is. 😐 (You can still have the locals try to get the MCs to leave town but not always have them act like such miserable people.)

I don't care what Danny may have done to cause the locals to be so afraid of Paul, why do they have to act like such nasty karens?
And why does it seem like no one in this book knows about twins?
