I'm considering writing a book that will be a mix of my own partial true story with my (now deceased) partner and occasional very short stories that we made up together of a sort of fantasy life featuring--who else?--us. So because the book I'm envisioning will be at least partially true, I thought this book might be helpful, and so far, it is. Plenty of advice even in the early pages about how to begin and proceed.

Annie Ernaux chronicles the ups and downs of an actual love affair over a few years. Her reference is her journals, which she apparently kept pretty scrupulously, and her knack of writing with what one reviewer calls the focus of a sociologist. Not everyone will want to read a story like this, but this kind of thing does happen--a lot--and I've found Ernaux's experience of it fascinating.
