Only updating to see how much of this abysmal book I have left to read...

There are no stakes within this book. The female main character is unhappy with her arranged marriage and she loves someone else whom she can never be with. That's the extent of the "obstacles" that she faces. Despite being a woman, her family never criticizes her sticking her nose where it doesn't belong (the sake business they own) and she always has the best ideas when it comes to expanding their influence... ugh.

I pretty much hate everything about this book. It's confusing and it keeps bouncing between years and characters, all of whom are boring. What a trainwreck.

Still trying to figure out why this was a bestseller. It's slow, full of unnecessary information, and now has convenient plot twists. Example: the main character is looking through rolls of photographs and sees a car with a license plate number on it. As luck would have it, he just happens to know which county the car is from because "he memorized the county codes on license plates as a child". WTF?

100+ pages in and I'm finally getting to the mystery aspect of the novel. People said it was slow to start, but god damn. Hopefully it'll be worth it.

Took me a while to get into, but now that it's finally moving along I'm enjoying it quite a bit. The only thing that I'm put off with is the constant reiterating of the main character's spinster status. Like, I get it, she's older and considered unavailable for marriage, please stop harping on it. I haven't forgotten.

I picked this up at a second-hand store for 50 cents. Thank God I didn't pay more. I'm hating the flat, emotionless writing and the flat, emotionless characters.

Not going to lie, I'm having a rough time with this one. Romance, even "sci-fi"/"fantasy" romance isn't really my thing. I'm only on page 125 and still have 400+ to go. Ugh.
Clare and Henry have the same narrative; their voices, their thoughts ... it all sounds the same to me. Clare seems like such a Mary Sue, and Henry ... Henry is kind of all over the board for me. Hopefully it'll start to pick up and get better.
