I’m gonna have to present in the Plato section at AAR one year…

“Μένω with me: Platonism and English hymnody”

“A disciplined and harmonious whole: Legislating morality in Plato’s Republic”

The gears are turning 😂

My guy is literally just free associating, this is chaos. I gotta be the most appropriate audience for this but 90% of his examples are patently dubious

Full review in the next few days… in short, this was exceptional and caused a seismic shift in my own conception of ancient Athens. I need some time to consider Anderson’s broader claims regarding the need for an ontological turn in our historical methods, which I may be reticent to agree with. More soon!

I typically don’t like an excursus unless it’s about Augustine, then all is forgiven

“It is in point to notice also the structure and style of Scripture, a structure so unsystematic and various, and a style so figurative and indirect, that no one would presume at first sight to say what is in it and what is not…it must be an unexplored and unsubdued land, with heights and valleys, forests and streams… full of concealed wonders and choice treasures”

Can’t wait to witness confusion that we are learning Lectio Divina from a (gasp) Catholic!

Quoting Augustine on every page is a surefire way for me to enjoy your book, fr

“Modern scholars who have worried over the fact that there are no passages in the Old Testament that directly say that the coming Messiah will suffer and die have missed Luke’s theological style from the outset. Luke’s reading of the Old Testament is anything but wooden, and the way in which messianic prefiguration works for him hinges not on simplistic one-for-one proofs… but on Jesus’ resurrection.”

I don’t think any NT scholar makes me snicker like Rowe, didn’t realize you could get published sardonically calling Historical Jesus studies an “industry”😂💀
