I started reading this in June or July of 2024 and am in the homestretch with only 227 pages to go.

You have to be in the right mood to read Poe—I mean everything he ever wrote. Mostly, you need silence and coffee. No one rapping or tapping at my chamber door, no mysterious heartbeats growing louder and louder, and definitely no howling cats bricked up in the basement.

Hoping to finish this by New Years Eve.

This book is unreadable. It's rare I give up on a book before page 50, but I quit at page 33. The author is exceptionally smug, and mocks with scathing vitriol war, movies, history, current events, just about everything including people trying to read his book. He specifically mentions that we can't read a map, have no knowledge of history, current events, and that war movies do not portray reality. Not recommended

This is one of the best books I have read in a very long time. A suspense serial published in 1860. Sinister villains and some very funny characters.

This is the only novel I ever read that I wanted to see what happened when I still had a hundred and fifty pages to go.

I didn't cheat though.
