End of Part 1 - this feels like a good place to take a short break and read something else as this is such a long book, but I just can't.

The characters in this book feel like people I've known my entire life. Or rather, I feel like I know versions of these characters in real life.

Lorena, "Lonsome Dove's only sporting woman," is one of the best written female characters I've encountered in any form of media.

I knew this was a famous book and all going in, but I honestly thought the near universal praise was likely just overhyping, as it often turns out to be.

So far, 120 pages in, I can comfortably say this is one of the best written books I've ever had the pleasure of reading.

Can't put it down!

After reading Chapter 43: Brethren, I feel like my mind needs 6 weeks to recover. This guy's writing is on another level. It is genuinely unlike anything I've ever read in my life.

"They say the ancients believed that one day the universe would contract. That time would turn backward and all the world would shrink again to its native form and angels would dance on the head of that pin. I say it did, for all the worlds beyond our bed and that little room were banished, and all Creation made to house just her. And me."

You think you're a smooth talker and then you read this guy's prose.

"The tiny hunched shape slid and slithered along the gutter, squelching its feet in slush and swearing under its breath... a small malignant wing nut."

Pretty accurate description of me walking to work most mornings.

Waiting until the end of a book to rate it is obviously the most sensible thing. It has to stick the landing after all. But I just know this is a 5* book. I read one Joe Abercrombie book before this one and let out a resounding "meh" at the end. He has proven me wrong in every possible way with this effort.

Absolute cinema.

"... and then she stabbed him up the arse."

I didn't think I could love this book anymore until I read that sentence.

Alright then Joe Abercrombie... maybe you are an exceptionally talented writer after all 🙄
