For a second there I was hopeful that perhaps this time I could be spared the overly pronounced physical differences between the potential lovers, but no, tall and smol it is again, because this is actually het romance in disguise, and ahhhhhh why am I still listening

I'm very curious how they're going to make the desire demon monogamous in this one - - urgh, no, I really, really don't want to see that. But right now these audiobooks are like addictive, too-sweet chocolate I can't stop eating.

I already know this one is going to stay with me for a long time.

And the jealousy, OMFG can you just leave me alone with that? Anyone who reads this, if you can recommend me some romantasy with protagonists who are preferably not cis men and without the above-mentioned horrible tropes, please do!

Ok wow, if you're anxious when you're away from your boyfriend for a day, that's not romantic, that's codependent. And what's with this super repetitive pattern of "smol feminine guy being protected by buff guy"? The first book didn't have these issues, they started in book 2, and I skipped 3 because them. Now here they are again. If I wanted this I'd read last century het romance, you know?

I'm not sure I will ever be able to explain the unlikely amount of love I have for this book.

This feels like a painful, melancholy holiday in the 90s (or before Covid, at least). It's also the queerest her/him romance I've ever read, and I want to go taste some wine immediately.

Yes, Tommy, please do ask them again what their fucking justice is and what it's supposed to accomplish. Here's someone willing to actually make amends for her crimes, undo some of them even, and nobody's willing to let her because revenge is more important, right? (And btw, this here is the Wanda Maximoff canon I subscribe to, not the1930s style hysteria story Marvel brought to the big screen AGAIN in goddamn 2022.)

I love how all the adults are caught up in their old feuds, in punitive justice and a bloated, useless idea of security and caution, and the teenagers need to fix it all, against the adults' will. Very timely.

This is fucking amazing.

One thing I like about Downum's work is that even though it's in a way classic fantasy, she doesn't adhere to any of the omnipresent act structures. She tells, the story as slowly and quietly as it needs to be told, suspense levels be damned.

This book resonates through my whole body. It feels like arriving at a place I was looking for but I believed didn't exist.

I wonder what it would have been like to read books like this as a teenager. Would I have liked them? Would I have found them way too dire and realistic? Now I look at these tiny characters as if I could protect them somehow. Could I be the helpful adult who understands? It's my job to understand, so possibly. But idk. Teenagers are complicated.

Since this was a very considerate Christmas present, I'm trying my best to read it (quickly). It seemed fine in the beginning, but by now I'm kind of suffering. It's my age, ok. I've read several books with this exact same plot and at least slightly less sexism, and all I can think is WHY.
