Wow. I feel the same way about Knapp’s writing as I felt reading Bonnie Garmus’s Lessons in Chemistry. Assured, patient, riveting.

Loving. More people should be reading this book.

At the first mention of Cis (Corman, her lifelong friend and producing partner) I’m reminded of the summer of 1997 when I interned at hers and Barbra’s production office in New York near Columbus Circle, fetching Cis’s coffee order, reading forgettable screenplays and the two times Barbra called in and there was that voice on the other end of the line!

Loving the stories and that voice sharing them with me.

For something so well written I’m finding it very emotionally uninvolving.

The pandemic’s impact on relationships is a theme I respond to. I’ve read other books that try to understand the pandemic but this book speaks to me. Some of these relationships remind me of a few friendships i had that were altered at that time. Not to say we were powerless to control the fate of our friendships only that sometimes forces of that magnitude are at work and you only see it after the fact.

I’m on page 8 and remembering why I loved Strout’s writing so much. You feel artistry from the beginning, something not a lot of authors give me even though I might enjoy them a lot.
