The film adaptation, American Fiction, is more successful at mining an engaging story out of the material than then novel, which is also concerned with the artifice of story telling. Monk is a much sadder and less sympathetic character here and none of the other characters are as fleshed out. The book frequently cuts to snippets of novels Monk is considering writing, including “My Pafology” in full.
