People who think that this didn't end in suicide.....did we read the same story? Anyway. This story was rich in precise prose, representation, and.... Torment. As readers go among the pages, we start to mimic the main characters frustration at her situation, her husbands unwillingness to hear her. It's a tragic tale of mental illness and repression of female autonomy.

in this yellow, dank room keeps her awake. I just think that line was so genius! The moonlight coming in from outside to illuminate bars, perhaps prison bars, showing how badly she wants out.

Her mental illness and mold poisoning is deranging her thought process so much that she truly believes the patterned, puzzling wallpaper is keeping the woman locked beyond it, when in reality this is her processing her emotions about her husband keeping her tormented in this room, under stimulated and distressed. "By moonlight, [the outside pattern] it becomes bars!" At night with the creeping moon, her entrapment-

"...I laid there for hours trying to decide whether that front pattern and the back pattern really did move together or separately" immediately after begging to leave, to escape the woman trying to claw her way out of the wallpaper, which her husband dismissed and further on ridiculed as his wife claimed mental illness, she returns to the wallpaper, trying to establish order in a chaos that no good will could fix

I enjoyed the line of Alice saying she's gonna write a book about this world when she's older, then realizing her size, losing steam as she doesn't feel equipped to write anything great right now. It mirrors the pressure that we feel getting older, how we are just pushed into being responsible adults before we are actually capable of doing "difficult" tasks. It sneaks up on us, and at heart we are kids still

I dreamt of this with Timothee chalamet as Ethan frome, his clothing much like that in little women, and it felt so tangible due to the fact that audiobooks immerse me so much more than plain old reading, crafting each scene with intense structure. The prose is beautiful, the language about the constellations and him seeing the world as paintings made me feel imaginative.

Extremely similar to Eileen by ottessa moshfegh, with sapphic themes fueled by the main characters desire to become the person who their "love interest" embodies: confident, magnetic, beautiful, alluring, mysterious, self-assured, correct. I couldn't get into this for awhile, but I recently picked up the Spotify premium audiobook and the narrator's voice, her accent, brings the words to complete life.

I've listened to so many videos and essays about the abuse that this family endured, and it just keeps getting worse. It's devastating to hear her describe it; it's different than a random person on YouTube talking about it.... it hits you directly in the heart.

The story about getting their teeth kicked out made me feel so sick. The idea that someone's intent doesn't always match the impact it had on our bodies and thoughts is something I pocketed.

I'm only on the foreword and sobbing. The fact that this book is banned and that the censorship of similar books, that criticize homophobia and racism, are going to increase under Trump's term is devastating.

"She gave Alison a big bag of safety pins that she thought might come in handy, and when they left for lunch, I surprised myself by bursting into tears" the contrast between her roommates mom giving her a sharp object (safety pins) out of care for her daughters convenience and Camille cutting herself with a sharp object due to her mother being cold and distant is STRIKING!
