Came for the worldbuilding, left for the cartoonishly evil villains that made everything else seem silly by association.

A bit too... on the nose? Telling not showing? Also, the way the author is using the central metaphor is just not clicking with me, so that's kind of a non-starter.

Umm, not for me.

There has been an astonishing amount of fat-shaming in this book about walking in the woods. Some things about the 90s I don't miss.

I watched a Tiktok the other day. It went something like this:

Boomer: [casually tells horrifying story of childhood abuse]
Millennial: [screams internally]
Boomer: My therapist says that was trauma. Do you think that was trauma? I don't know...
Millennial: [still screaming internally]

That's this book.

The transcription on this digital edition is pretty spotty. There are misspelled words, whole missing words, I even noticed a whole missing sentence. There might be more I'm not catching since I've never read this book before.

Last night I had a dream that Mr. March was secretly the President of the United States, and that's why he's in Washington, and his family lives in secret for their protection. How about that, Mrs. Alcott?

Ulp. My craving for T. Kingfisher got the better of me. Let's hope this isn't as scary as The Twisted Ones.

Oh boy am I tired of the white-male-protagonist-learns-to-get-over-himself plot. Why is it here in my manta rays from space book? I got this through ILL so I feel obligated to finish or else I might give up right now. >:[

I think I need to be in a different mood for this. I'll try it again later.

The audiobook is a reminder that actor and voice actor are not the same job, and voice acting and audiobook reading aren't the same either. Nathan Fillion's reading is full of nuance and volume changes, which I'm sure makes a fine performance, but also makes it a nightmare to listen to when I'm driving. I'm not actually sure if I dislike the book or just the listening experience, but either way I'm stopping for now.

Ouch. Bujold does not pull her punches. Poor Mark.

I give up... for now. Will definitely come back to this when I'm in the right mood for it.

This is so obviously a male power fantasy that being annoyed about it being a male power fantasy feels pretty disingenuous... but when I got to the <spoiler>elf girl in the tentacle house</spoiler> I just couldn't anymore.
