I wasn't sure that I could read these novels because I read primarily to escape and be entertained. Expanding my mental horizons is always a plus, but I don't want to suffer too much while reading. I just don't need it. Life is hard enough. But I found the main character (who is a quadriplegic) appealing and the tiniest grain of hope sufficed to keep me involved as a reader.
