Still trying to figure out when Zachary and Karigan fell in love? There's been lots of covert staring and internal thoughts pining for the other, but have they had more than 2 private conversations in this series?

Why do we care about Capt. Mapstone? The author seems to be using this characters POV as a means of conveying minor plot points, which would be fine if she had any personality or storyline of her own. I appreciate that the author is using a more consistent cast of characters, but Mapstone feels like a narrator: She gets attached by groundmites and the Eletians save her, she tells Zachary to leave Karigin alone.

-Is it significant that when he chooses "Robin Swift" we are not also told his given Chinese name at that time that he's leaving behind?
-Feels like he already crossed a big line when he did not assist the laborer who needed his help in translating to board the boat. Or maybe we're being shown that he is already jaded and sawit was a lost cause.

About halfway through, and it is slooooow AF. The slowest of any ROTE book so far.

Immediately hooked. I do find myself frequently flipping back and forth between pages to find what year the different POVs are in. This non-linear time aspect is throwing me for the most delightful loop!
