It bothers me that the book is using recognizable Muslim cultural practices as shorthand for menace while withholding the actual behavior that makes Baba dangerous. Islam isn’t what makes him predatory, so why is his Muslim coding being used to create the sense that something sinister is happening?

I’m not even that far into Flowers for Algernon and I am HOOKED. The way Daniel Keyes creates emotional tension from page one should be studied. Nothing has even really happened yet and somehow I’m already stressed, protective, and emotionally invested. This is about to wreck me.
