I'm rereading this book for truly unhinged reasons.

Man this book is a BLAST so far. I'm letting the Boat Terms wash (heh) over me, but I'm immersed and joyful.

Forgot to mention, but: this book is set in 2000 so I'm calling it here: 9/11 is going to be a factor in some way.

Yooo this book is a DRAG in the beginning. Eileen was immediately compelling; Ottessa what's going on?

I've now read two novels by RF Kuang, and both times the book has gone to absolute PIECES by the 300-page mark. It's not like they were towering works of literature to begin with, but it feels like Rebecca Kuang abruptly loses interest.

More than 100 pages in, and every. single. potential. source of tension, or conflict. has been immediately resolved. This book will not permit your heart rate to rise by even half a beat per minute.

I am less than halfway through this book and already SJM has abandoned any pretence of being about anything but the Death March of the Female Main Character and her (alleged) Love Interest boning.
I say alleged because the FMC has met a mysterious dark-haired stranger who has rescued her from creepy dudes who were about to assault her, and whom she has described as the most beautiful man she's ever met.

This book has...no intention to worldbuild, has it.

This is the third Rushdie book with a crackerjack beginning, an (I'm guessing) fantastic ending... and a middle that's such a slog that I have picked up two separate other books while I'm reading.
