‘love, though it expends itself in generosity and thoughtfulness, though it give birth to visions remains among the sharpest expressions of self interest. Not until it has passed through long servitude, through its own self hatred, through mockery, great doubts, can it take its place among the loyalties. Many who have spent a lifetime in it can tell of less of love than the child that lost their dog yesterday’

‘’you really are in a bad way. You don’t know the value of money, you live hard, you’ll knock up one of these days, and be ill and poor; you really ought to think about a nurse’’ - mr. stryver to Sydney his friend

i love Dickens. This dialogue is perfectly timed, as seems every sentence. the previous scene depicted genuine love and then showing this man’s true disconnect and bad intentions.

“‘The Centre of Truth’: holding that Man had got out of the Centre of Truth-which did not need much demonstration-but had not got out of the Circumference, and he was to be kept from flying out of the Circumference, and was even to be shoved back into the Center, by fasting and seeing if spirits… Much discoursing with spirits went on-and it did a world of good which never became manifest.”

so far many wonderful facts to reflect upon. i love Dickens so far. he uses beautiful language and paints pictures in my mind. he cared deeply about what he wrote that’s obvious.

this book often makes me stop to ponder. in what ways are past norms affecting societal function? my interpersonal relationships? my individual choices? and where are we trying to go? what do we do with all of this? who am i trying to be?

reading this while elon is performing a digital coup on the us government is intense. this could happen anytime.
i just finished the part where Compubank takes all the banks’ money, then they cut off women’s access and force them to leave their jobs so they rely on men. this book is so good because it’s so painfully possible and relatable
