I'm a bit uncomfortable with this so far, regarding the "source" of "Werepets" and how they're used. I'm hoping there's some resolution for this. Also hoping that the characters gain a little more depth.

Twice now this book has scared the wits out of me!

Atlas is breaking my heart, watching a working war dog acclimate to civilian life and dealing with ptsd while living with the family of his handler and unable to understand their grief, yet still feeling guilty over it. Also loving how the one reaching him the most is a little bichon frise service dog wanting to be friends.

Jeeze this is rough. It's not often you read books that don't glorify war, but touch on the hard raw parts like ptsd, loss of a spouse and the effects on not just their children but their animals.

Oh sweet Gods, this has many things that hit my aesthetic but THE PAST TWO PAGES MADE ME FREEZE LIKE A DEER IN THE HEADLIGHTS AND I AM. LEGIT FREAKED OUT.

This is a slow descent from true crime with local occult oddities into full blown WTFery, but it's like easing into a hot bath, and it's SO GOOD. I have an hour left and I don't want it to end!

Chapter 13 and I keep forgetting this takes place in Canada and not The Deep South. Delightful mix of small town Gothic, horror and crime.

Read it so many times, but always worth a reread.
