The football game was very risky, I mean the prisoners have no idea what the SS wanted. Obviously to win. But did they want to win by a lot or what? And also the new doctor guy seems like he either likes or hates Lale for his cleverness he might find out about the trading he’s got going on. I hope not.

Gita got typhus and the girls helped her, I never would have thought they would be able to help her about the camo without getting noticed and killed but apparently they could. New character Cilka, somehow she kept her hair? Maybe because she’s favoured by that ratchet man that treats her worse than the rest? Gypsys and children were put into the camp. They describe gypsys as their own race or something

I’ve kind of lost respect a little for Lale. Putting Gita and the two other girls in danger, as well as the father and son. I get that they need more food and that but idk. It just seems too dangerous and not worth it. But Lale with Gita, why is he putting both of their lives at risk like that just so he can talk to her. That is definitely not worth it and is so stupid. He will get her killed.

Chapter 3 - Hate beretski that bastard. Also what the hell happened to Pepan? I quite liked him. Smart. I wonder if they killed him and why? Tbh the guards don’t even need a why cuz they are just cruel. The girl Lale meets and has a crush on, doesn’t seem like that will end well. Especially with Beretski already trying to mess with him.

Shown the gas chambers in the second chapter, it’s kind of hard to wrap my head around the emotions. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve heard and seen in the media before or it’s the fact that it’s in fiction writing. But it doesn’t feel real.

The prologue and chapter caught my interest straight away. Written in a way that is easy to understand despite not knowing a lot except the obvious.

Amazing. Great way to wrap it up. So many plot twists and shocking information given to you with every storyline. Honestly could not remember all the names but could remember most of the situations. Amazing book. Highly recommend. Learnt a lot and started off with no interest in the matter and finished wanting to know more

The ending of the last chapter was amazing. It was like a short recap and showed Bryson’s purpose for the book which is that a lot of what happened in the summer of 1927 has gotten completely forgotten. Even though the most revolutionary things happened such as the invention of television, the nationwide use of radio picked up and a flight over the ocean began flying all over the globe today.

I am really starting to see Bryson’s humour now. He’s quite funny. The guy who played Dracula his whole career and then was buried dressed as his character is funny. and there was quite a few sarcastic remarks in chapter 27 & 28. Makes me wonder if I just didn’t catch them before.

America really has been a social experiment since the 1920’s. Laughlin being able to legally experiment and healthy people is crazy. Carrie Buck being sterilised and also her sister who had no idea she was going to or had been sterilised and was told she was getting treated for appendicitis. The world is a mad place. Or maybe just America?

Bryson is actually a bit funny chapter 22-23. It’s very subtle and easy to miss. Chapter 23 is by far my favourite chapter so far. The film industry. He spoke about Clara Bow, Warner Bros, Buster Keaton and so much more. I see why grandad likes him so much, if I could read a whole series of Brysons if they were write about things I find interesting and if he did it like that.

Learnt about Mount Rushmore, interesting. Mrs Wheeler died after being set on fire by cooking. Horrible way to go. And the two van sweringan brothers, feel like there should be a book written on them if there ain’t already. Very sad when Mantis died because Oris depended on him a lot. I’m surprised he lived 11 months without him.

Coolidge is useless. Boxing was brutal. Boxer who stopped and became and actor and was close with Charlie Chaplin. 14 year old witness to a robbery said “I could tell he was foreign because of how he ran” huh??

Fordlandia? What a silly thing. Wipe out an area the size of the state of Connecticut??? Madness. The amount of diseases and the maggots under the skin as well, discovering a new disease through the production is crazy. Harry Ford was a crazy, inhumane man.

Inflation was so bad that money someone could survive on previously, could then not even afford a cup of coffee??? I don’t think so.

Chapter 5 is a little bit weird it’s the shortest and it just happens to mention something I am interested in which is a woman who went from being a house wife to being a lawyer and one of the top lawyers at that

How could so much crazy bad weather and so many natural disasters happen in America in such a short time period?!

Phrasing and ordering made me realise that some people aren’t as good as they seem to be on first impressions and to take everything into consideration. Also mention about a murder case that inspired a film that started film noir. Which I found interesting.
