I don't want to read this but I'm leading it for book club. Male character is an aging writer with faux humility blah blah, over it already.

Abigail
Abigail is on page 77 of 478 of The Complete Chi's Sweet Home, Part 1
This thick volume doesn't have many words but 1) the cat and child use baby talk i.e. "scawey" for scary, and 2) the parents' dialogue is presented realistically, with broken sentences 3) informal speech like "I've gotta go" is used.

Since I'm tutoring a person whose friends are "actors and internet celebrities" in China, a person who's favorite activity is shopping, I'm going to read this with her. Part of me feels like bad teacher. But I need her to want to read on her own. You'll note the rest of my feed has lots of nice serious material, including graphic novels about WW2, China in the 1950s, and modern day Afghanistan. Please recommend more.

The scenarios aren't necessarily familiar to ELLs but the book doesn't have low-frequency words.

Not for beginning learners, but for the next step up. Some English idioms, but mostly accessible for ELLs.

Good for teaching where to put "not" in a sentence. Example: You were not there!

The pictures and flaps will probably please kids. This book is basically Night in the Musuem. A kid and an adolescent wooly mammoth chase a little wooly mammoth through an eclectic museum.

I looked at the reviews, and interestly the negative reviews are from pearl-clutchers who've made themselves the tone and diction police. Or from young ladies who are thin and I assume not in touch with culture. Even a couple chubby girls just were bored. Let's hope their pouts don't put off anyone from ready this IMPORTANT book. I must be an angry feminist because Lindy West doesn't seem anything but normal to me.

I can't renew this audiobook, so I only finished through Chapter 12. I'm going to mark it as "read" because I put many hours into it. Maybe I'll finish it someday on a long drive. If you liked this book, please tell me why. I don't connect to it and I don't enjoy it, but I know friends who have.

I wasn't hooked at the beginning, interest went slightly up as the story gained momentum, and then dropped to a low that makes listening to this audiobook feel like a chore. After 7 hours, do I try to make it to the end, so I can do a proper review? Or do I just accept that I'm obviously the wrong audience for this and let people find out for themselves.

Yes, I continue this against good advice. Mostly because I have it on audiobook and put it on to clean. If only an editor had cleaned this. I am wondering if this book could be used in an educational setting to have students practice literary criticism. From all lenses: oh dear.

I am enjoying this book, and learning things, but the organization of the book is non-chronological. I'm not sure WHAT the organization feature is. Theme, maybe?

I often forget that within my lifetime widespread sexism was considered normal and acceptable. My respect for Steinem is growing as I realize how much work she put into helping women. I'm also frustrated by how many people around me think feminism is a dirty word.

So far, Gloria Steinem has described her childhood and it reminds me of many other memoirs in which people with unsteady childhoods grow up to be "successful." I guess the word for this is resilience, or maybe grit.
