So far, during chapter 12, if I'm not mistaken.. After Adeline and James set sail to London, Franklin became the favourite. Due to his stubbornness, he died of a case of polo from eating unwashed strawberries. After the death of Niang's favourite child, she started to neglect Susan. Susan later became Fathers favourite due to her intellect and beauty.

So far, the children are treated badly. Lydia being forced to arranged marriage, the 3 boys sent to england.. but Adeline has had it worse. Continuousley getting punished for stuff she didn't do. Removing her rights as well. The common phrase was.. "Family Ugliness Should Never Be Aired in Public."

* Her mother died 2 weeks after her birth.. she doest know what her birth mother looked like.
