Lightly confused but in an enjoyable way

This is good practice for me to try to enjoy books bc the story is good even when none of the characters are likeable lol

Middle part of the book is very ~ meta ~ which confused me at first but was quite interesting

I fear fictional depictions of ecologists will always make me cringe 😭

Just some light airplane reading 🙂

What a treat to read a book that doesn’t refer to a minimum of 3 French philosophers or Karl Marx !

After procrastinating reading this book for the last 6 years, I spent half of the workday today reading it ! It is by far the most lucid book of hers I’ve ever read, but I still would not recommend it to anyone who doesn’t have a professional reason to suffer through it :) unfortunately for my ego, I will be citing this in chapters 1, 4, and 6 of my thesis :-)

Already the best book of hers I’ve read so far

She’s just writing with pure vibes no structure / plot / character development lol

Stressful and chaotic reading experience but v impressive novel and also feel like I learned new things ab the wars post Indian independence

I has taken multiple months and many books read in the meantime, but I have finally become captivated by this overwhelmingly complex story

So far this is hilarious omg the “testosterone autism” chapter really made me laugh

Zadie Smith’s introduction alone … excellent

3.5? I keep hoping I will love one but I fear pop science books are just not for me because there is no room for genuine consideration of nuance or complexity (which is not really the fault of the authors)

Using Norway ( / Scandinavia in general) as an example of an ideal of better functioning society is soooo lazy because Norway is extremely homogenous and > 90% white ?? Lame

Enjoying the anti Dawkins / Diamond vibe but idk if he’s really convincing me of anything so far

Main takeaway so far: Agnes is sooo cool

V good but so dense need a break every couple of chapters

Reading bc won the Booker Prize! When the shortlist came out this was not one of the titles I was interested in and now I know why: it is v clearly written by and for men 🫥 maybe it will get better towards the end

3.5, would recommend as interesting mystery read

I read this in a couple of hours and while she seems amazing (if we ignore the went to space w katy perry thing) this book was ehhhh

Much denser than Sula, really does feel like reading Classic Literature which I refused to do in high school but am admittedly enjoying now

The adult characters are quite boring and a bit contrived but the children are fantastic and beautiful!!! Climate change theme felt heavy handed but I guess it is genuinely an existential threat to all life so perhaps that’s for the best lol

This writing is excellent it really is but it’s also SO violent omg
