We are out of Anne Tyler territory and now I'm reminded of the author's earlier (and wonderful) Big Machine.

This feels like one of those old Anne Tyler books where characters would go in unpredictable ways.

Oh sure let's cry! I didn't know we would be crying.

The audio book lost my place and went back 25 pages or so and I am enjoying it so much I didn't mind a bit.

I don't get along so well with these loooong paragraphs.

So good. The Wexfords aren't my favorites but I always enjoy them and they do give me the Rendell fix i need when there are no Barbara Vines or standalone RR titles available.

Really good but I have to go back because who were those two people in the first chapter??

Nice little heart tug with the book this morning.

So difficult for a gen x reader to focus when the book has a character named "Mrs. Garrett".

This bickering couple has me rooting for a runaway bus to enter the scene.

"prescient indigestion" ha!

"I'm to the point, at this moment, where I gotta make a choice. Either bash your head, with this rock, or walk away."

"Grown up Frank was driving an Amazon delivery truck now, in his Lamborghini baseball cap."

Pretty GORY!! Good lord.

Neanderthals, prostitutes, cryptids, French gas station wine, cheap panties, environmental activism, undercover investigations, Russian scientists!! LOVING THIS

Fantastic opening with this outrageous narrator had me chuckling all morning.

I've been literally TEN pages from the end of this paperback epic for a week now. Probably would have finished but I went back to the audiobook, where I'm back around page 600. The narrator really makes these pages just sing. It's a wonder.

Our Russian history book club bailed on Dostoevsky after 200 pages so now back to the usual. And what a treat with such a fabulous opening chapter. I mean we already get human remains blasted out of a cannon (sending 'False Dmitry' back to Poland by express air) and naked alcoholics shivering outside bars to await their fix.

Almost to the end and I went back to finish the audiobook ... have to say the audiobook narrator really elevates this book as a reading experience.

I sure love how really long books, say like 800 pages, build up a big momentum so you can't put them down for the last 300 pages. Well, most of them anyway. This one just had the whole bunch of raggedy losers trudging into the 25th new town of the book. SO ready for this to wrap up already.

Really enjoying this one so long as we are not spending time with any character from the village. #teamslewfoot

Ok Brom I am begging you to provide ONE likable character besides prot. Seriously how is everyone in this whole damn village the exact same kind of sanctimonious asshole? I am #teamslewfoot

The Book Club is bailing out in spite of some face-slapping, drink-throwing dramatic action from two women. Just as well because this novel was a stretch for the Russian History Book Club anyway.
