The United States’ bid for continental hegemony (exemplified by manifest destiny and the Mexican-American War) posed a threat to European monarchies and spurred them to find new ways of hemming in American power. This included supporting the establishment of the Mexican Empire during the American Civil War.

In usual Glaser fashion, this book is dense. It’s well-argue and certainly thorough, but I feel like I’m chiseling rock.
