I dropped this book in the toilet, but that is by no means a reflection of my opinion.

This book is so predictable, it can't decide if it wants to be a comedy or melodramatic, and I HATE HOW IT KEEPS SKIPPING ALL THE INTERESTING PARTS.

(Spoilers) I loved this book until the part with Alice. I felt sympathy, I was curious how this would play out. And then the book had to go and evoke my LEAST favourite trope of all time. You just KNOW a book is written by a man when a woman has sex once and gets pregnant. From the wedding onwards, everything has been so supremely predictable I barely want to finish it. Ugh.

This is. Interesting.

At the moment, Cassidy's story is way more interesting. I think Nelson is much stronger at 1st person than 3rd person narration. However, Cassidy's story feels very disjointed, and it breaks up the main story. I'm not sure where this is going, but I intrigued, not annoyed (... Yet. And hopefully it doesn't get that far). I don't like the idolization of Cassidy, but maybe that's the point.

The more I think about this book, the more frustrated I get. Why does Zhu only have one emotion? I get she's a monk, but she's a *bad* monk. I would love for her to show anger, fear, happiness, anything other than just "desire." speaking of, what is it she desires? To be great, yes, but what does greatness entail to her? Wild you can read 400 pages and know nothing about the inner life of your protagonist.
