this. is a fascinating novel. and written in such an intriguing , lovely way , but is equally disturbing ? i wonder what 16 or 17 y/o me would have thought , reading this book. i watched the movie in 2019 — i could only remember one scene.

this is literature where i don't know ... where to stand. i am unnerved , intrigued , but mostly perturbed.

also : thomas mann's "death in venice."

20251008 : so so good , i like this author.

20251008 : loan was running out of time , and i can't feasibly finish this audio in two additional days. the content is repeated punches to the gut every 2-3 minutes , it's a tough but very necessary & critical read. i'll be hitting the waitlist again when i've moved back home & settled in. so far : 4 / 5 ⭐️

20250928 : i'm 🤏*this close* 🤏 to a DNF. the first half of the book is wondrous. the second half ... eh. it's not boring , per se , but anticipated. repetitive ? maybe i'm a little too confident in thinking that i've predicted the plot // what-happens-after-all , but i've got some ideas that aren't far-fetched. stay tuned.

i started this book to take a small break from "the lilac people." and now i'm fleeing from ricki & ezra temporarily 😳🫣 it's too early in the day for all that. so i'm back to holocaust survivors. how beautifully written (TLP), but is shredding me to pieces.

20250923 : similar to what honorée faith jeffers has going on , which is exactly what i was looking for. spans across 3 generations of family members (mother — daughter — daughter's son). explores accounts of racial disparities and effects following hurricane katrina in louisiana. (mention of new orleans east , chef menteur ; coming back to "the yellow house," by sarah m broom. gosh.)

20250906 : so close to done , and i don't want this book to end. it's beautifully written , gut-wrenching , and spans across decades of multivariate experiences. i hope the finale of this novel ... reaches the well-deserved clarity and rest that's sought throughout the entire work.

20250825 : it's a bit fun balancing different books at the same time. a physical , an audio or two. so many materials & resources to learn from. so much , all the time. (!!)

so many plot shifts and reconnections , old story lines converging into new ones ... a lot to keep up with. the current ... place , is frustrating. does TD remain complicit because of high society? he could run anytime ... but i think , it comes down to hobi ... whom i want to adopt me, might i say.

20250814 : i've just read some of the most disturbing things , and i'm thoroughly disrupted. the plantation owner / stealer / colonizer ... i'm hoping his downfall is beyond brutal. i hope he suffers every burning moment that he deserves in the deepest pits of hell.
