I’m catching up on the YA Dystopia novels everyone else read in high school

Reading this part of the book reminds me of discussions in modern history classes that revolve around the past. The criticisms of the period are just about as present as the storyline. Are they fair criticisms, sure, but while it shows rather than tells, the showing happens in a pretty straightforward and simple way.

Wow. The author describes horribly traumatic events through a child’s perspective in such a believable way. At the same time, several characters, especially the ones that we follow, are extraordinary in a way that seems especially rare, making them a little less relatable at times. I’m really excited to see where the story goes!

I think the book overstates the importance of application essays just a little (although what do I know). Really interesting though! I’m glad it discusses both strengths and weaknesses of the essays included
