The writing is good, the personality is abrasive, and the content is navel-gazing.

The disconnect between modern and classical ideas of sexuality, and the way Merlis so clearly imposes a modern sense of sexuality onto the story, is distracting from the other clever elements, such as the weaving of modern and ancient elements.
