My biggest critique of this novel is hard to pinpoint. I’ve read all of Kawakami’s main novels, and that poetic prose that is attributed to her is not evident in this latest novel. I have two different theories as to why, but I don’t know which or if either is true. One is that this is a new publisher and new translators. The second is that she seems to be leaning into the “thriller” side a bit.

Still having so much fun reading this, but I am itching for a bit more plot which feels out of character for me. Like, I can see something is building or being alluded to and I feel like I’m waiting for whatever that is to happen.

So far one of the funniest novels I’ve read in a while. I love all of the horrible people in this book.

No, I’m not reading too many books at once; I’m just in the midst of a crisis of decision and focus.

I don’t know who I’ve become but this is where I’m at. My sudden interest and curiosity in the fucked up but possibly brilliant enigma that is DFW has led me. Also the foreword by Michelle Zauner was unexpected but exactly what I wanted.

There is about to be a crazy reading update from me cause my current reading habits are inconsistent and unhinged but will hopefully maybe return to normal eventually

Woof this has been tough. It’s been so long since I’ve read something written in the late 19th century and it has so many moving parts. But there will have to be a brief pause as I read a novel for one of classes.
