I have just read Didion’s famous, or rather infamous, chapter on women’s rights. It was very interesting to read her perspective that women inflict sexism upon themselves and adopt a victim mindset. She claims that this victimisation is a result of lives unfulfilled. A scapegoat for what could’ve been. I disagree wholeheartedly, and perceive it to be Joan's own paranoia coming through...

Utterly delicious. I could listen to Didion write about water all day. Paranoia is flooding California and the free lovin 60’s are over..

So much sexual tension when samuel is killing slugs with carol, a boy gets hit by a car on his birthday but the cake man needs his 16 dollars, and Jerry murdered some girls because he got married too young….

This book is making me feel very melancholic… humans can be so cruel in love.

I really love this book - especially the writing style. It is truly beautiful. I don’t know if i’m being harsh but I sometimes find it hard to warm to the protagonist. I wish she had a bit more depth than her brooding and wanting. BUT this may come over the next half of the book. It also captures perfectly the burning sensation of men’s eyes and unwarranted comments. Excited to see where it goes next. 😋
