I read this a while ago, I got no idea

We get introduced into the main character and her squad while they walk through the deserts of Afghanistan and find out she is named Ellinor and is a combat medic. Her squad and her are somewhat new and start walking to the village they were told to report to.

Krystia goes to the center of the town and finds her mom had been hung by the commandment. She goes to the cemetery next and finds that the last three Jews had been shot and buried by the Nazis, which makes Krystia go to the insurgents and she tells her uncle and aunt that her mom was hung. The insurgents let her stay after all her belongings were taken. Krystia goes to look for Maria so they can escape to Canada.

The three Jews they hide are found out to be some of the last 30, and the house gets raided and they get found. The Nazis also take Krystia's mom away to the jail where they'll execute her and the Jews. They leave Krystia and tell her to go back home where the Nazis took and broke everything. Krystia finds Marga, the neighbor that told on them and finds out her mom was going to die if she didn't tell so she had to.

Krystia and her mom decide to hide three Jews in their floor and get their old jobs back to buy food for five. They couldn't convince the fourth Jew who is a doctor to leave. One year passes and another round up happens and 200 more jews are taken. One more year, and the last of them, including the doctor, get taken and killed so the town is cleared of all but a few Jews.

Krystia and her family survive the winter and the commandment lets up on the tax and doesn't take as much food, and him and his wife actually start buying milk and cheese from them. Weeks go by and no more Jews are being singled out but are still being seperated by buildings But in reality, they finished a death camp outside town and storm the Jews camp and take all of them to the death camp to be gassed.

Krystia and her family butcher Krasa, another cow they had hidden and eat the meat for a week before the Nazis fined them when they got suspicious so they were forced to sell the meat. The Nazis raided the ghetto where they put all the Jews and went for everybody but Nathan, Kyrstias friend, escaped. The next day, Maria and Nathan leave a note saying they're escaping. Krystia and her mom have Lysa and two calves now

The Ukrainian weather keeps getting colder, and all the Ukrainians and Jews keep dying slowly. Krasa, Krystia's family cow, is pregnant and also not making milk so they have to feeding her so they can sell or eat one of the cows. Krystia finds out that women's stockings sell for a lot with the German women since they want fancy stuff from all the dead civilians. Krystia sells the extra stockings and manages to get

Krystia keeps going on with Ukraine still under Nazi control, but it is almost a holiday for Jews, but the day before, the Nazis demand one kilogram of gold and take 41 Jews hostage. When it's paid, they don't get let out of the jail but shot instead. Krystia and her sister Maria keep giving fake IDs to Jews which makes them seem like Ukrainians who get rights, but it keeps getting colder so they have to buy food

While the Nazis keep stealing, Krystia and her sister Maria consider going to Germany to get money to help survive the winter. She then, along with her sister, find Borys, their cousin, is still alive and working with the insurgents to help fight off the Germans and they get handed an envelope of fake IDs to hand to Germans to get them mistaken as Jews and Ukrainians. The insurgents get found and executed publicly in

Krystia overhears some Germans talking about their plans for the Jews and their Hunger plan. they force the Jews to wear arm bands and will kill any who don't, and any Jews 14-60 have to work at labor camps or around the town. The Ukrainian leader gets arrested and their independence is given to the Nazis. The Germans take all the food from people without kids and alone, while they take some but not all to families.

All the original inhabitants that are still alive go to the center and they are expecting something like a speech from the Nazis, still under the impression that the Nazis are there to help. In reality, the Nazis call 101 men forward who are all Jews and say they're murderers. The Nazis take them into the graveyard where Krystia finds a pile of newly messed dirt and people sorting through the dead people's clothes.
