Didn’t realise studying endgames properly was so time consuming. Sat with my engine and this book for hours on a plane just grinding through chapter 1 on pawn endgames..

I can sympathise with Nastasya in her predicament between accepting the Good and destroying herself with Rogozhin. On the one hand you want to be redeemed and declared beautiful and good. On the other you recognise your own evil and you desire to rather go to hell because that's what you deserve.

Reading the last chapter of Part 1 pissed me off but also made me feel sad for Nastasya - she could not accept Myshkin's view of herself as a virtuous women. Her self-loathing drives her self destructive behaviour. She views the Prince as an 'idiot' in his willingness to respect and love her; which was troubling to read.

Letter 1 - reminds me of Bukowski’s poem “So you want to be a Writer?” in beautiful prose. Would like to think Bukowski read this letter and as per his more aggressive flair produced his own spin on it.
