Extensive agriculture may have been an outcome, not a cause, of urbanization. Choices about which crops and animals to farm often had to do with the burgeoning industries of early cities.

Growth through innovation depends on a direct link between culture and technology, through attitudes toward nature and the beliefs regarding relations between humans and their physical environment ... A critical cultural belief that drives economic growth and complements the belief in the virtuousness of technology is a belief in economic progress. Such a belief is positive, normative, and prescriptive.

The drivers of technological progress and eventually economic performance were attitude and aptitude. The former set the willingness and energy with which people try to understand the natural world around them; the latter determines their success in turning such knowledge into higher productivity and living standards.

Cities are tangible things. Yet they have a life that transcends all this because they will often think and act as people who *belong* to the city. The city itself is a structure raised primarily in the human imagination, which allowed for the possibility of amicable relations with people they had never met.

Such a quick read (thank God it doesn't waste more of my time), not because it's well-written, but because it's too boring; or because I'm not familiar with the US education context; or because it speaks in elite arrogance..

Isn’t mastering econometrics supposedly conditionally independent of one’s confusion given their effort? The data of mine rejects that at every significance level. Tried an IV to fix it, but my instruments are quite weak… just like my technical skills. Now at least Keith Jarrett’s Köln Concert keeps my regressions running, as always🎵

Ran a 10k today to clear my head, didn’t help. They said econometrics are “mostly harmless,” as if identification assumptions aren’t actively giving me an “identity crisis”. But sure, just assumptions, aha?
