I’m going to hate it that I only got a hold of the unabridged version…

Chapters 82-86: Dorothea speaks with Rosamond. Rosamond and Lydgate try to come to an understanding. Bulstrode helps Mr Vincy help Fred. Mary commits to Fred. Dorothea and Ladislaw reunite.

Chapters 78-81: Lydgate struggles with everything. Dorothea sees Rosamond and Ladislaw together. Ladislaw unloads on Rosamond. Lydgate accepts help from Dorothea and Dorothea has words with Rosamond.

Chapters 72-76: Bulstrode’s fall and confession to Mrs Bulstrode. Rosamond hears all and does not understand. Dorothea entreats Lydgate to let her help him.

Chapters 69-71: The death of Raddles. The complicity of Bulstrode and the complicity of Lydgate.

Chapters 66-68: Lydgate deals with Rosamond’s obstinacy and subterfuge. He tries gambling. Fred rescues him and is corrected by Farebrother.

Chapters 63-65: Lydgate struggles to manage debt. Rosamond takes matters into her own hands. Lydgate struggles to manage Rosamond.

Chapters 60-62: Raddles meets Ladislaw. Bulstrode comes clean to Ladislaw. Dorothy and Ladislaw say goodbye-bye (again).

Chapters 57-59: Fred has it out with Mary about Farebrother. Tertius talks to Rosamond about their finances. Ladislaw learns about Casaubon’s will.

Chapter 56: Fred takes up business with Caleb Garth & makes a mess of things. Fred makes up with his father.

Chapters 53-55: Brooke’s campaign crashes and burns. Ladislaw says goodbye to Dorothy. Dorothy prepares to be her own person. Celia pouts.

Chapters 47-52: Casaubon’s will after death is revealed. James handles things. Ladislaw manages Mr Brooke’s run for Parliament.

Chapters 44-46: More Middlemarch politics. Lydgate pursues his medical studies and practice. Ladislaw ruffles some feathers. Lydgate and Ladislaw become friendly.

Chapters 41-43: Enter Raddles. Casaubon has health and marriage problems. Dorothea sees Ladislaw at the Lydgates'.

Chapters 39-40: More family squabbling between the Casaubons and Ladislaw. Provincial landlord issues foreshadow Mr. Brooke's political career. The Garth family gets a break.

Chapters 35-38: Rosamond and Tertius navigate money and engagement. Ladislaw visits Dorothea and gives some family history. Casaubon lays down the law. Mr. Brooke tries to get political.

Chapters 32-34: Mr. Featherstone wants a will burned; Mary refuses. He dies. Middlemarch assembles for the funeral. Will Ladislaw is in town; Casaubon seethes.

Chapters 30-31: "Casaubon falls ill too. Lydgate treats him & counsels Dorothea. Mrs. Buldtrode sticks her nose in business and precipates an engagement."

Chapters 26-29: "Fred falls ill. Lydgate ministers Fred and makes eyes at Rosamond. The Casaubons return from Rome and get news."

(I must have goofed in my calculations on percentages; there's no way three chapters are just 1 percent of this novel.)

Chapters 22-25: "Fred blows a deal." "The Garths get the bad news." "Mary speaks some hard truths to Fred."

Chatpers 20-22: "Dorothea's lame honeymoon. Marital wake-up calls. Ladislaw speaks his mind."

Chapters 17-19: “Small town politics. Lydgate ruffles some feathers. Ladislaw sees Dorothea in Rome.”

Chapters 13-15: “Fred gets a loan.” “Fred and Mary have words.” “Some background on Lydgate.”

Chapters 7-11: Dorothea gets ready to play house with Causabon. Mr. Featherstone dangles his inheritance. Mary speaks some sense. Dr. Lydgate and Rosamond make eyes at each other. Fred is in some trouble.

Chapters 4-7: “An unexpected engagement. Mr Brooke contemplates entering politics. Dorothea offers her services to Casaubon.”

I like to think of these chapters in terms of episode titles, which is fun, especially when you have the benefit of omniscience.

Chapters 1-3: “Dorothea and Celia talk jewelry. James gets Dorothea a dog. Casaubon doesn’t talk shop.”
