Just finished the analysis on Eisenstein’s Potemkin!

This has become a silent film, director and actor encyclopedia. Though not necessarily bad, it's more of source of references. A great place to go if you're going a deep dive into silent cinema and want to branch out. O'leary does makes an effort to do an international survey, so you'll hear all lot about European cinema

A somewhat shallow dive of the silent era. It's not so analytical as it is editorial. It's so far a chronological report of important names (e.g. films, directors, and actors). This book seems to be better suited for someone who is already familiar with the history and important events of the silent cinema and just wants to expand their knowledge of material.

Martyr! Is a book I never want to finish! I'm starting to slow down in an attempt to savor it. A sort of bad habit I have with my favorites. I love Akbar's writing and his expression. I love the ways in which he expands on Cyrus's life through the tales of those surrounding Cyrus. A very wholesome book, I adore <3

I truly enjoy this narrative - being inside the mind and memory of a child - expresed in a way that is accessible and thoughtful as an adult. This little gem has had the unexpected result of reconnecting myself with my childhood and reflecting. It has inspired me to hold onto my memories for the sake of remembering and for the sake of identity, to remember my gratitude, my identity, and some of my roots.

Glad I made it through the prelude. I don’t have much experience reading poetry, so I was worried I wouldn’t understand her writing or that it would not be meaningful to me. But i’m now in the age of reason, and stunned and delighted by her vivid recall of her childhood. I’m a bit nostalgic of my own.

Starting this book in remembrance of someone dear to me: A life long Patti Smith fan who once wrote of her

“her emotion is so raw and desperate, yet so fierce and determined. and i knew that what she sang actually came true. that she did get out. that she was a big star. just listening to her made me feel strong. it made me feel tough. it roused my fighting spirit. and it always cheered me up.”

I’m loving this book. Kaveh Akbar is an astounding writer. His writing is comparable to poetry and music; saturated in raw and intense human emotion. I’m reminded of the power and beauty of language. Cyrus in an incredibly compelling character with a muted flame that burns with potential. I’m excited to see where this book goes and so happy to have found it.
