It's hard not to think of the movie, of course, and S.K.'s short stories always drag on at the end. Watch out for the racial slurs.

I had to make an actual list to keep track of each character, who and how many other characters to which they were connected, and why.

It was like trying to untangle a ball of yarn your kitten found.

I should have found some sharp scissors (for the book and yarn, in case that was unclear.)

Tedious. Not sure why I finished reading it.

A bit scattered and spoiler alert: What's going to happen when they're back home? Fun read, though.

Can't review. I mean, how many diverse letters of love can be written?

Ugh. Most of the stories centered on elderly men living in Florida anf facing only a glimpse -- and I mean glimpse -- of horror. The title is rather a ripoff.

Many sentences were written in bursts -- very irritating. "Laurie," however, made me cry. So it gets a 5. The rest were about a 2. Bummer.

Christina is reading The Beast You Are: Stories
Even with the short stories, I found it hard to let go. I guess I expected more horror, like "A Head Full of Ghosts". "The Cabin at the End of the World" is next.

I know I'm supposed to rave about this, but as usual I'm proudly unique. 50 pages in, so I'll keep trying.

Christina is reading Thirteen Stories: The Definitive American Short Story Anthology by Eudora Welty (Harvest Book)
Hard to rate -- the language of the time is so awful. Yet some of the way words are put together is stunningly beautiful.

I could take or leave some of the stories -- boring and tedious, like they would be required reading for the purpose of analysis in some college class.

DNF.

Too romantically dramatic for me, though the first-person narrative seemed fun.

"Situational psychosis. Clinical depression. Nervous breakdown. Shell shock -- all names for the neurological fault line that gives way under severe pressure, a shattering, devastating internal earthquake that leaves raw and gaping scars across the lives of everyone in the vicinity."

You know, despite the fact this really could have made a short story (with the risk of "Something came home with them from Russia" piling up even ridiculously more), I pretty much raced through it.

As the mom of a teen, I can relate in some ways. I truly felt so much gut-level fear. But there was more to it. And all the end scenarios I guessed at ... well, the book delivers what it promises.

Christina is reading Fear and Trembling: Shivery Stories
Some of the stories were good old-fashioned fantastic, thankfully lacking the attempts of modern stories trying too hard. Others, not so much. I love how in Alfred Hitchcock's introduction he calls Ray Bradbury a promising author.

It's unfair to judge a childrens book from such a time. But I just didn't get pulled on.

Christina is reading Beatrix Potter's Journal
I was never a big Peter Rabbit (etc.) growing up, but this journal is just a sweet, small glimpse into the author's life. It's perfect for someone like me -- a newbie into her life -- and with the always fun (but not enough of here) interactiveness. I assume it would just be simplistic for a scholar of her life, but I liked it very much.
