Not even through the first chapter, but I already feel the need to keep track of how many instances of superfluous restatements there are in this book. It seems like "a kind of *this*, a *that*" is something of a crutch for LaRocca. Hopefully this pattern breaks at some point and it's used more sparingly. Will keep a running total of how many times I see it.

Note: I'm reading this as a gay nonbinary tmasc. I am also reading this as a horror fan, especially a queer horror fan, and a classics snob. There was zero way I was going to enjoy this at all, and I suspected as much. That said, I hate it already.
First sex scene was punishingly un-erotic, and I dislike the character of Ilya extremely. Gonna finish it tho. I'm nosy.

absolutely FASCINATED by the concept of cannibal morphs. huge lizards with big teeth. the entire body changing in order to make cannibalism easier to accomplish and accommodate. horrific concept, give me more.
