opening with the bit where the defiant crew is passing around a klingon bodice ripper is great. i’ve read 150+ trek books since first reading this one and can confidently say the character- & worldbuilding work in the ds9 relaunch is unparalleled

i know they worked the bobby coming out as mutant scene to make it as blatantly queer-coded as possible in the film and it shows in the novelization SO well. absolutely gut-wrenching moment when he stops at looks back at his childhood home half in flames and wishes he could go back to The Way Things Were while knowing he never will

i question my ability to make it through a 900-page book these days but this one is so funny i just might
