Ever get a sizeable chunk of a way into a book and start wondering where all the women are or why all the main characters (of which there are many) are men?

someone tell me this is worth persisting with. I'm remembering why I rarely read books by cis men.

This is so very obviously an early work (first by publication date, as far as I can tell?) but it's already got so many of the elements that make me love her later books.

So far, the impression I get is that it's engagingly written, but not actually anything new to someone who has depression and has some experience of living and dealing with it.
