I was underwhelmed for the first 2-3 chapters as it seemed to have all the "what-if-kids-had-magic" fantasy tropes, as well as a central character who was diminished for being fat and lonely. But now at the end of chapter 5, I want to know about these extra special kids in the titular house in the cerulean sea.

All of the fantasy epic tropes! The reluctant hero's journey. Hidden/magical parentage. A fellowship of children, wizards, and warriors. Dark, faceless horsemen. Orc-like monsters. Misty mountains...

Still, it's enjoyable.

Through Ch 4.

This book is beautiful so far. I find myself wishing that I could also read it in the original Swedish. Given that I don't know Swedish, this is kind of strange, but I sense there must be certain things that are particularly Swedish that a translation must forgo. Also, In skimming the synopsis of the Swedish edition, I learned that one character's name was changed from Mira to Kira. I wonder why?

Book readers: I need some spec fiction recommendations for matriarchal societies. I read Glory Season by David Brin years ago, and I might need to revisit it. But it doesn't quite scratch the itch I have right now. #smashthepatriarchy

I am 36% through and I keep waiting for the thing that drives the plot to start. And I'm getting really annoyed at the main character who absolutely does not exhibit the qualities of a Carleton alum. I am THIS close to quitting The Circle which is what Mae should do.

I just am not enjoying this. I think I will out it aside.

Most of these poems bore me.
