Part 2 done :)

For what it’s worth, I do appreciate how smoothly time passes in this book, and how cleanly it transitions from broad recaps of a war campaign to specific scenes. Kuang’s pretty good at that.

Taking a break from The Dragon Republic to read something a bit more lighthearted. Simard has a wonderfully unique, genuine, and witty voice that is a delight to read, and she does an excellent job at making the scientific bits easy to understand for an Average Joe (me) without being condescending. The only scientific book I’ve read that uses the word “skedaddle” in a serious capacity, which I appreciated.

I think that even the most shallow, cursory understanding of Chinese history is enough to drop this trilogy by a whole star

I think the more of this book I read and the more I think about this trilogy in general the less I like it.

I forget how easy Kuang’s prose is to read, especially once it starts to pick up. That’s not necessarily a good thing, but it certainly speeds digesting this thing up by quite a bit. Enjoying more than book one so far.
