I’ve read a lot of Le Guin’s work, especially her essays, and her introduction to this book reminds me why I love those in particular. Her voice always makes me feel conspiratorial, as if she’s letting me in on some great secret or an inside joke or perhaps both. It’s a unique type of wisdom. Thoroughly enjoying so far.

For what it’s worth, I do appreciate how smoothly time passes in this book, and how cleanly it transitions from broad recaps of a war campaign to specific scenes. Kuang’s pretty good at that.

Taking a break from The Dragon Republic to read something a bit more lighthearted. Simard has a wonderfully unique, genuine, and witty voice that is a delight to read, and she does an excellent job at making the scientific bits easy to understand for an Average Joe (me) without being condescending. The only scientific book I’ve read that uses the word “skedaddle” in a serious capacity, which I appreciated.

I think that even the most shallow, cursory understanding of Chinese history is enough to drop this trilogy by a whole star
