The chapters III but particularly IV describe the Cossacks, a community of people that were granted a separate amount of land under Tsar Ivar the Terrible and lived apart from the Russians. Despite the mountaineers being their enemies, they have more respect for these enemies than for the Russian soldiers coming to their aid. The women in the Cossack society typically hold more tacit power than in Western society.
