Another protagonist has been introduced named Lukashka. He is a Cossack and just killed a Czechen with a rifle.

The chapters III but particularly IV describe the Cossacks, a community of people that were granted a separate amount of land under Tsar Ivar the Terrible and lived apart from the Russians. Despite the mountaineers being their enemies, they have more respect for these enemies than for the Russian soldiers coming to their aid. The women in the Cossack society typically hold more tacit power than in Western society.

Chapter I and II introduce the protagonist so far: Olenin. A young man, who seemingly is incapable of loving. He embarks on a journey to the Caucasus, leaving the higher social circles of Moscow behind in search for money and freedom while repeatedly mentioning that he is capable of love.

The author raised interesting concepts and explained in the introduction the various forms of Skin in the Game.

The first two chapters are a continuation of the mysterious writing style, where pieces of the puzzle slowly come together

I find the book contains various points of contradacting information. A great example is on pages 168-169. First, Grant refers to a study that claims praising character instead of behaviour often leads to improved moral standard building.

However, the footnote on the next page issues a warning: praising character instead of effort could lead to unintentional consequences.
