As someone who has never had much interest in books centered around combat - there are aspects of this book that I do struggle to move through. Not because it isn’t well written, but because I have minimal interest. However - I will say that the main character makes up for my disinterest by being one of the most raw and grippingly complex characters. You root for her and grieve with her simultaneously.

It looks like we’ve found our rising action where our protagonist Tansy is now confronted with the stories conflict while moving through a few unknowns that pull on her heart strings and challenges the darkness she’s been fed throughout her life. Let’s see where this takes us.

I’m in awe of this book. Genre’d as a cozy fantasy but the descriptive paragraphs and magical prose make it feel like a literary fiction! It feels good to be able to warm up to a book that offers the feel good elements of a cozy fantasy with the literary element that helps you see and feel the characters and the world in which they live. Hoping for an arc soon though. Things do seem a bit too…perfect…

The writing is already sucking me in. This authors writes with a voice full of color and descriptive magic that peppers the pages with warmth and whimsy. Seems to be exactly what I need to fall into a snuggly, cozy fantasy about second chances and discovery during this colder weather.
