I'm not really sure how to rate this. The plot twists we're great, exciting enough to keep me going and eliciting at least a gasp or two. Ultimately, however, I don't care enough about the characters to read on (I think this planned to be a duology) 2.5 stars

I too grew up in Baltimore under slightly different circumstances. I could not always relate to the tales he told (which I attribute mostly to age and gender differences) but I understood them. An important book, a series of linked essays, that should be read by all who are concerned about the issues of race, class and our inner cities.

I wanted to, but I just didn't feel it inside me.

I honestly believe this is destined to be a classic. I understand the complaints of some reviewers that all of the characters weren't as fully fleshed out as they could have been; that would made the tale a little more complete, hence 4 stars instead of 5. But as is, I was often left breathless by the prose and the message.
