In City of Quartz, Mike Davis examines the socioeconomic history of Los Angeles as a city via a Marxist lens of class struggle and dialectical materialism. Davis delineates the early history of the City of Angels into the behavior of several groups: the Boosters, who founded the city on speculation and real estate, the Debunkers who struggled against Capital, the Noir intelligentsia, and Weimar Exiles.

a fantastic exploration of how war affects different people depending on their involvement in it, set in the backdrop of the horrific siege of sarajevo and wider yugoslav wars. the prose is simple yet elegant, lending itself well to highlighting the characters’ emotions over set dressing.

very interesting so far! toys with a lot of scientific concepts i’m otherwise unfamiliar with but presents them in an informative, digestible, and yet poetic way. the mystery of the book deepens with every chapter and few answers have thus far presented themselves. excited to continue reading.
