i didn’t know this was gonna be so gay. was also thrown off by all the “plz bro, plz have kids, they’ll be so hot like you, except you’ll be old then so you won’t be hot, but they will be” but then i was like oh williams saying some really interesting stuff about time

i don’t really understand poetry, but auden has quite alot of poems that i kinda just roll my eyes at and then several poems sprinkled in that literally get me teary eyed and i find myself thinking about all day

wake up babe! new fav historian just dropped. also a history of the hospital that acknowledges nurses exist! unfortunately novel

also idk what the other reviews are talking about, very well written and engaging.

bro i did not know this book was gonna be so horny

first of all it’s a very difficult read in general. that i’m reading it in french does not help.

but im def picking up on the sex and death links, and beauty in the filth.

its good so far very horny and dark

to be fair mainly reading this in english, just a couple chapters i read in french when i had the energy.
one of my fav intros by foucault, second to use of pleasure. the whole “i write to have no face” had my thighs hot.
it’s getting more confusing as i get along. really have to slow down with every sentence. he’s really doing a lot here with methodology and honestly can i say “discursive metaphysics”?

this reading in french is tough work.
the book tho, is breathtaking “she had bent her loving face down over my bed and held it out to me like a host for a communion of peace from which my lips would draw her real presence and the power to fall asleep”

takes like 20 min a page so get ready for play by play updates. so far very horny. i’m a fan already

yeah this is a really great book.
lines that make you wince and squirm: “one of the delawares emerged from the smoke with a naked infant dangling in each hand and squatted at a ring of midden stones and swung them by the heals each in turn and bashed their heads against the stone so that the brains burst forth through…”

but passages also of such philosophical depth i turn them over and over in my head

halfway thru paradiso. honestly it’s really hard to appreciate something after 400 pages. lots of good stuff about desire and will. interesting stuff about place, blood, and providence.

purgatorio est fini. much more enjoyable than inferno. i just struggle over whether penitence requires pain and suffering. ending was wild

halfway thru purgatorio. i like it a lot more then inferno. there some passages that are incredibly beautiful, but half the time it gets theological/philosophical i disagree with the point it’s trying to make

wait so our gender and sexual desire arises from wanting to fuck, but being unable to, our parents? is that what butler is arguing, or is butler arguing against that?? so confused

finished inferno.
literally reads as dante describing the most horrific torture, then picking on some guy for being a sinner and being tortured, asks them to tell him what they did wrong on earth and then dante going sounds like you deserve to be here huh u sinner. rinse and repeat.
i read a commentary on one of the cantos and thought wow this sounds so thoughtful and interesting but when i read it was like huh??

ngl God kinda sounds like a whiny girlfriend rn that’s like look at all this nice stuff i’m doing for you and you don’t appreciate it and do nothing in return.
but God’s God and i’m meech so i’ll try to see the good and love in God’s whiny ass attitude

3 thoughts: 1) i wish neil postman got to watch the sopranos 2) this is old man yells at cloud par excellence, but i think he might be right. tv is making us dumber, and the written word as the dominant form of communication forms more complex and nuanced thinking 3) sometimes nuance is overrated, and the best response to something is “damn that’s crazy”

there’s niche and then there’s this lol. ngl tho it’s kind of a fun read. it’s nice to read academics who actually acknowledge that nurses exist
