I’m starting to lose interest.

The romance feels flat and boring, and the entire beginning of the book feels like it’s just been resolved. Now, the main character has to fight evil just for the sake of fighting evil, and has no personal motivation.

The main love interest seems unreasonably interested in the main character, making the pairing feel obtuse.

Alright. So far has some really good world building, showing off the unique asymmetries of the setting. In a strange way, the world gives a similar vibe to Attack on Titan, with the whole “humanity under the heels of monsters” theme.

Book is alright but the love triangle is getting a little obnoxious. Also, having characters refer to “countries” in a medieval fantasy setting feels a little strange. Or the reliance on real world names for fruits and nuts, and don’t even get me started on them playing billiards.

But still, alright.

Still workin on this. Been really enjoying it, so much so that I just made a coffee stained map of the world as a reading aid.

This book refuses to burden itself with anything less than necessary to the point and journey it describes. Because of this, there is never a dull moment.

I want to be in this world so badly

There are concepts that I find myself avoiding thinking about, such as the reality of humanity being just another type of animal. I feel like when statements get too grand and radical about the nature of human existence, I find it hard to at the same time value the complexity and nuance in my own life. Made the end of book one bit a bit harder…

The little things in life make up so much more of the world than we often remember. This book both is, and is a commentary on, this concept.

I think this book approaches a topic that has been done before this book (Cartoon Network’s “ Infinity Train”), and after this book (Everything Everywhere All At Once) in media I’ve seen. They are all different routes up this same mountain of grappling with regret, and the versions of ourselves that we could have been.

I’m bored with this book, because I had to figure out a way up the mountain myself.

The quotes are wrong, and I realized this book is just a copy of Infinity Train. It came out after it too.
