Oh wow this is excellent writing. First novel. I read a bit of an interview of the author. She's brings her experiences as an immigrant from Korea, being a trial lawyer, and having a kid with medical issues and using this therapy together for the book. There have been deaths with these things with people treating autism and such. Horrible painful preventable deaths, and controversial treatment. Great writing so far

Also selfish because in the end he was just 10 feet from the trail. So if they didn't do this "rescue" mission, hikers would have found him in the spring when the snow melted. Just kind of a dick move

I love the letters written on recovered scraps - old letters, food labels, box liners.

It reminds me of old civil war letters I've seen in a museum, letters written over old letters in different directions, pages of books and bibles salvaged as they didn't have anything else

I'm struck first by how incredibly selfish this decision was. It sounds nice, organic back to nature type stuff. Disappear into the wilderness that you love and return to the elements. Beautiful

Except it starts with a rescue mission. Climbers and helicopters. So much money and effort, at the risk of their own life, for someone who was already dead, and wanted to be dead

The character who is a surrogate is familiar with the handmaid's tale. It's nice to escape to a 2011 world where that book is wild almost unimaginable fiction

Seeing this was published in 2011 and the author had 9 books. Now it's 67. That makes me happy. I'm enjoying the characters

There were big signs from the beginning, but I didn't think they would would actually materialize to a sweet and hopeful wlw love story in this mainstream book. Lovely

I've heard this before. Youth pastor "had an affair" with a 16 yo. Or she might have been 15.

We shamed her and ran her out of the church. He is the regular pastor now, still married, God has forgiven him and he apologized to the church but did he apologize to her? I think about that shit all the time. We treated them backwards

His clear manipulation is sickening and it's sad to see how he gets her to feel things are her idea

Was looking where the author lives as I would expect western mass instead of western Massachusetts in spoken dialogue, but who knows

Liking the characters a bit more as they.go through things.

It's nice to hear about navy stuff after the last ship. Seems familiar while I don't know much about planes. The preparedness of the ship (as a general concept) and the hospital is satisfying and comforting

I've seen the movie so I'm not sure I can call this book "light" but it's less philosophical let's say than the last one. Simple. Simple characters, simple plot

This book has a stamp from Barney's Book store, a local used book store that I went to as a kid. It's been closed for years. Must have been one of the last books sold there

Shenandoah becomes like Beulah Land. I'm kind of homesick for a country to which I've never been before. Beulah refers the land of Israel, but also heaven and the intangible idea of a homeland, a place of belonging
