I don't buy these guys as high schoolers. They're cringe as high schoolers would be but it's a grown up , hello fellow kids kind of cringe that smacks more of the author. And the details are weird I dunno, feels like he's trying too hard

The library had a shelf of recent YA books and this is one that spoke to me. The teenager slang feels a bit stilted (no one ever said hip in MY time, even to be ironic. Do people even know what that is)? But I look forward to the human story part.

How ironic that in 2019 (referring to events in 2009) a lawyer would compare chelation therapy to treat autism to giving Tylenol

‘There are eyes!’ he said. ‘Eyes looking out from the shadows of the boughs! I never saw such eyes before.’ The others, surprised by his cry, halted and turned; but Legolas started to ride back. ‘No, no!’ cried Gimli. ‘Do as you please in your madness, but let me first get down from this horse! I wish to see no eyes!’

😅 cant blame you there, Gimli

Everyone has a small secret that when poked at is hiding horrible darkness.

The mothers' confessions in their thoughts of wishing in various ways that they WEREN'T a mother, the relief of time away, and the devastating guilt of ever having thought that, along with Young's feeling of disconnection from.her teenage daughter. All expressed so well and so relatable

I see corporate user interfaces and AI art all day. I forget what real art looks like. The pages are cool and glossy to the touch. The images are oversized and I feel my eyes contracting and dilating to take everything in, in rich colors that sometimes hurt . It's a whole experience, and something we're not getting from screens. I'm going to start checking out "coffee table books" regularly

Very silly, based on creature movie tropes and the characters from Sharknado, but it's fun and different for my brain

It feels a bit like cheating to use this as one of my books read for 2026 lol

But I am reading all the text and captions and spending time with the photos. I don't really look at big visually interesting photos these days and it's a relaxation for my mind and my eyes in a way that reading a novel is not. I really need that right now

"there should have been a bang...life-changing disasters came with loud noises, didn't they?"

Feel that

Oh wow this is excellent writing. First novel. I read a bit of an interview of the author. She's brings her experiences as an immigrant from Korea, being a trial lawyer, and having a kid with medical issues and using this therapy together for the book. There have been deaths with these things with people treating autism and such. Horrible painful preventable deaths, and controversial treatment. Great writing so far
