Zimuwang is finished with Devotion (Adapted for Young Adults): An Epic Story of Heroism and Friendship
I just finished reading Devotion. The sad ending made me feel bad. Although Tom tries so hard to save Jesse, it is too risky to get a pilot out of a flaming plane in enemy territory. Their bond was incredibly moving, and Tom’s determination showed the depth of their friendship. I kept hoping for a miracle, but the reality of war hit hard. This book made me reflect on the sacrifices made in war.

I found an interesting sentence on page 201. One cook said to Jesse," Now, when people see a black person in the hallway, he won't know he is a cook or a pilot." That shows what black people's social status is. In a warship, when people see a black person, they will likely think he is a cook but not a soldier. I can see that how much effort and how much pressure he needs to suffer.

On page 147, I find a sentence in war did saving one life often means taking another. War is a very brutal thing. This book tells us that it forces us confront the cost of war, the weight of choices, and what it means to hold onto loyalty during bad times. Perhaps the truth of devotion isn’t just in who we’re willing to die for, but what we’re forced to live with.In the book no one want to fight, but they want to live

After reading this book, I want to talk about it using my perspective as a Chinese student. Growing up in China, we learned about the Korean War (fighting against the United States to aid North Korea) as a history of heroes defending their country. But the book got me thinking, did those soldiers really know what they were fighting for? Is their loyalty to their country, to their comrades, or just to survive?

After reading this book, I have always been thinking about what is the theme of the book is. The name of the book is Devotion. We can find other themes, such as friendship, racism, and war. However, I think that the book is written around the theme of devotion, wath will happened next are there gonna be a time the the boo shows Loyalty vs. Betrayal. I am so curious about what will happen next.

Tom’s unwavering loyalty in an era of prejudice moved me. Although military segregation, he stood by his Black comrades, sharing food, defying bigots, even with the risk of getting kicked out. Their bond, in trenches, proved that courage isn’t just bullets, but breaking barriers. This let me think of the last book that we read, the brotherhood between Gene and Finny does not go well, they do not believe each other.

Chapter 8, where Jesse, against all odds, earns his wings as a pilot in an era when racism against Black people was such a big thing. This story isn’t just about the individual, it’s about the quiet the mentor who risked his reputation, and the family who prayed for his safety. Their help helped Jesse overcome a lot of problems. Of course, Jesse's quality to fight for his dream is very brave and admirable.

After reading chapters 2 and 3, I found the difference between Tom and Jesse. Tom can go to school and have a lovely home. But Jesse needs to work, and he doesn't even have shoes. Tom was told by his dad to assume the best for people; on the other hand, Jesse's dad just wants Jesse and he's brother to get the hell out of Mississippi. I am curious about how Jesse became a pilot and built a deep relationship with Tom.

On page 6, author said that " In 1950 their friendship was genuine, but ahead of the times." In that time, the relationship between black people and white people was not recognized. Tom and Jesse's bond in 1950 was courageous, defying racial norms. Their genuine friendship challenged societal barriers, paving the way for change. A bold step toward equality when such unity was rare, especially they are both soldiers.

Gene goes back to school and there is a lot of things happen such as new teacher comes, and Gene gets into a fight. However what I think is the most important part is what happened with Gene and Finny. In that phone call, Finny lets Gene play sports for him, which gives Gene a chance to atone for what he did. I am shocked that Finny can forgive Gene after Gene ruined his life, also curious about what will happen next

After reading chapter 4 I think that this chapter took a bad turn. Gene’s jealousy and inner conflict-hit their peak, and his action changes everything. He convinces himself that Finny is trying to make him but Finny is actually just being a good friend. What happened on the tree shocked me, that is not a good way to treat your friends if you have a misunderstanding with your friend just have a conversation with him.

In the next two chapters, Finny breaks the swimming school record, but when Gene says Finny can break the record again with the coach and official timer, Finny lets Gene keep it secret. I think this is a very good quality low profile, no swagger. Students should learn that humility and true confidence come from actions, not just recognition. This highlights Finny’s pure love for the sport itself rather than fame.

After reading A Separate Peace chapter 1 I found this book very interesting, this book has the word peace in its name and the time is during WW2 will it talk about war? However, the first chapter mainly talks about the friendship between Gene and Phineas, the friendship seems to be very good but the author which is Phineas says that he is jealous about how every teacher likes Gene and Gene can handle a lot of things.

At the end of this book, Changze changes a lot, he is a person who was trying to get in and live in America before but knows after the trip to Chile he found that he is helping the bourgeoisie exploit other people. This causes a lack of attitude at work and he is warned by his boss, Jim. Furthermore, Erica disappeared I think this represents Changze losing his connection to America, after all, this thing he suffered.

Changez's decision to stop shaving his beard feels symboliche’s shedding his old identity and embracing his Pakistani roots, even as it makes him a target after 9/11 America. Erica’s decline is bad She is lost in her memory I think it's like a metaphor for Changez’s fading connection to America itself. in this chapter, Changez is standing at a crossroads, and I can’t wait to see what happens next will he change more?

In chapter 10 of The Reluctant Fundamentalist, Changez’s transformation is becoming more apparent. His conversation with Juan-Bautista in Chile was a turning point—he finally begins to recognize his role in America is to exploit others. I found that the change of his mind is very interesting.I think after this he will start to do things diffrent he might turn into a person that start to think about his hometown.

In the next two chapters, Changze faces a lot of challenges, such as racism and having a hard time with Erica. He feels lonely because of all of this so he goes back to his home in Lahore. But his home in Pakistan is very poor, and the contrast with the United States is sharp. However, I think home is always a place where people can go to rest, refresh themselves, and find some comfort just like a boat and harbor.

In Chapter 6 the author talks about Erica and Changez's relationship. Changez said that he was desirous of embarking relationship with Erica more than a friendship. They did, but when they have sex Erica can't do it because she still can't forget her ex-boyfriend. Personally speaking I don't think it is a good way to live because the people that are still living needs to keep going weather is for dead people or other

In Chapter 5, the author talks about Changez's reaction and what he faced after 911. First when he saw the news he did not feel sad for the victims but he kind of felt happy, I think he does it is because of US is a very strong contry but it got damage by a small plane such as other teams best player got hit people will feel good about it.Also the tread he get in airport is not fair to him, he did not cause the 911.

In Chapters 3 and 4 I find the theme of Identity and Belonging on page 33 The author writes,on street corners, tourists would ask me for direction. I was four and a half years never an American, and this shows he still doesn't have a sense of belonging. As an international student, I sometimes feel the same even though I speak English, and have friends from America I am still from another country which can not change.

In the second chapter, Changez introduces Erica, also a Princeton graduate, who becomes an important figure in his life. He describes her as beautiful, intelligent, and magnetic, drawing him in immediately. I think Erica represents an ideal of America, which Changez admires deeply. His romantic relationship with Erica mirrors his attempt to integrate into American culture. but he still can't feel at home in America.

author writes about, a man who talks about his life and an interview he did when he was in America. We can tell that he went to Princeton and felt proud of it. However when he is in the interview, the interviewer has some prejudice against him. We can see it when the interviewer says Are you on financial aid which makes him uncomfortable. Also we know he is a self center person because he just keep talking by him self

“This chapter really touched me, especially Dex’s struggle with feeling like something is missing. Their thought, ‘What am I missing?’ perfectly captures that nagging sense of dissatisfaction that I think many of us have felt, even when things seem to be going well on the surface. they leaving behind the familiar to confront that uncertainty,This let me think of when people are trying to jump out of their confer zone

In Chapter 4 author talks about how Dex started his adventure and when he kept going on the tea monk journey. Just like we talked about in class the other day what does Dex want The chapter invites readers to reflect on the human condition: Why do we crave something beyond comfort and routine? I think Dex wants to find something that is meaningful in their life
that also shows his courage to discover new things.

In the third chapter, Dex starts to settle into their new role being a tea monk while Dex is appreciated by the communities they visit, they continue to feel a nagging sense of dissatisfaction, as though something vital is still missing. and during the travels, he also built a connection with nature which also shows the theme in the title "Wild".Also, it suggests that their journey is as much about self-discovery.

I find something interesting and also confusing. In first chapter I found that the author used them on the character Sibling Dex rather than he or she. I think it might be because them is something called Tea Monk which serves the needs of their community by offering tea and emotional support. In the second paragraph, the book talk about Dex want to leave their structured life to find a calling they don’t understand.
