One of the most interesting and best sections of any book I’ve ever read. Ivan and Alyosha and “The Grand Inquisitor” section.

Ivan and Alyosha… good stuff

Went from Les Mis a few months ago which had so many digressions to this which is just pure plot and characters and moves so quickly (in the best way). Throughly enjoying this one, probably my favorite read since East of Eden.

215-217 were incredible

“For even the disavowers of Christianity and those in mutiny against it are in their essence of the same Christian mould, and such they have remained, for to this day neither their wisdom, nor the fervor of their hearts has been vigorous enough to create a higher image of man and his dignity then the one indicated of old by Christ.” (226)

I can already tell this will be one of my all time favorites, love the vibe so far

If you’ve seen the movie One Battle After Another there is a tense scene about 3/4 through where the characters are amidst a riot and music is blaring and you know something is about to happen… somehow Steinbeck has managed to make this same kind of heightened tension in a book about a family on the road in the dust bowl… pretty impressive
